Announcing a new Meetup for Shutterbug Excursions!
What: Washington's U Street Corridor
When: August 8, 2009 10:00 AM
Where: Meet at the African-American Civil War Memorial
Greetings Shutterbugs!
Let's meet for a Saturday morning exploring the historic U Street Corridor in Northwest DC. This is quite a picturesque neighborhood with lots of African-American historic sites and some great eats as well.
We will meet at the African American Civil War Memorial at 10AM (check the metro exit as there are two exits from this station, one of which puts you right at the memorial) and wander through such landmarks as the "Black Broadway" where the likes of Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Pearl Bailey played in local venues, and where others like Duke Ellington, Thurgood Marshall and Langston Hughes live and worked.
The architecture here is rich and the neighborhood is steeped in tradition. It should make for some interesting photo ops.
Before we call it a day, perhaps we can stop at Ben's Chili Bowl for some of it's classic cusine - "half-smokes" and chili-cheese fries. This place is a photo op all by it's self.
