"What's An F-Stop?" - A Beginners' Workshop in Adams Morgan

Starbucks (map)

Selected By: Steve Rosenbach

This one is just for beginners!

Would you like to know a little more about how your camera works? What happens when you change the lens opening or shutter speed, and why would you want to do that, anyway? Would you like a few tips on the basics of composition?

Then this workshop is for you!

We'll meet at the Starbucks at 18th St & Columbia Rd in the photogenic Adams Morgan neighborhood of D.C. Grizzled Shutterbug Excursion photo-veteran Steve Rosenbach will conduct a 30-45 minute beginners' class, after which we'll head out into Adams Morgan and you'll get to practice what we learned. We'll have some other of our "pros" along for this part of the workshop to offer individual help.

Around high noon, we'll adjourn to somewhere in the neighborhood for lunch for those who would like to stay. It'll be a great opportunity to ask questions, share our experiences, and just have a good time.

This workshop is limited to 12 beginners. If you aren't able to make it this time- don't worry, we'll do this again soon (probably in another location.)

I think this was my best excursion with our group. Steve did an extraordinary job with a great discussion and location. I loved the camaraderie between our members, too.

Thanks Steve for the PowerPoint slides! They're much more than I ever expected. Glad you shared these b/c I was not able to attend this meetup as I had hoped.

I had a great time - I enjoyed being with everyone who attended. By the way, the pictures some of you have posted are great! I hope everyone who was there posts some photos.

Well prepared presentation with great examples. I loved the "bad background" fountain example. I was familar with most of the material but learned a few tidbits here and there. I appreciated Steve bringing his little Russian camera to show us the shutter, etc. Although I understood the theory, it was cool to see right through his little camera when the shutter released. Thanks for doing this, Steve!

This was a good high-level overview of how cameras work and how to use some of the camera settings to take better quality pictures. The "tips and tricks" made me think of ways to photograph that I never had before. It also gave me a lot of ideas for experimenting with different settings on the camera to achieve different effects. I would love to see a follow-up composition workshop.
