CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE

Let's go to the Chinese New Year Parade in Washington's Chinatown!

We'll meet at the Archives Metro Station (Green Line) at 1:15PM on Sunday, February 1st - It is a few blocks from Chinatown and it should be easy to find the group there because there is only one Metro exit at that station. From there we will walk down 7th Street to the Parade and Festivities - finding great photo ops along the way, of course!

Here's what the Chinatown Chamber says:
The Chinese Community of the Greater Washington Metropolitan area is going to celebrate the "Chinese Lunar New Year" in Washington, DC Chinatown on H & I Streets, NW, between 6th and 8th Streets from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This year will be the year 4707, year of the OX. In Chinese legend, people born in the year of the OX are known to be patient, stable, strong, dutiful, reliable, practical; determined, honest and loyal; more importantly, they are down to earth and tolerant. The most industrious and hardest working person. As a result, they are often patience and diligence. This OX year will bring stability and growth where patience and diligence pays off.

CCBA, Chinatown Revitalization Council (CRC) and Chinatown Chamber are very proud to sponsor this event. The festival includes folk dances, musical bands from various genres, local high school, cultural exhibition and a parade. The popular lion and dragon dances, as well as a five-story high firecracker that will be lit at 3:45 p.m. will also be featured in the program.

During this celebration in the Asian culture, it is traditional to wear RED which is meant to ward off evil spirits. So feel free to come sporting your favorite red shirts, jackets, hats and scarves!

Family members and children are welcome!

Anyone wanting to stay around dinner after the festivities - I understand that there are many wonderful ethnic restaurants in the area; I am interested in trying "Wok and Roll" on H Street (it is an important historic site for those Lincoln era history buffs). Note on your response if you want to stay for dinner as well.

My dad worked and lived in China in China for many years - 1988-1999. Mosly in in the North developling a gold mine that has't been build yet. Doing this time frame, he got many buisness people in San Francisco to bring back Artwork and every year they would Action it off to raise all the money to build the Asian Art Musium in San Fransico.

I'm a new member, so it was nice to meet members of the group! You are all sooo very nice and welcoming!! I'm looking forward to attending the next meetup. My husband, son and I had a great time, but unfortunately we got separated from the group once we got to the parade route.

Lots of fun! Thanks for organizing this and giving me an excuse to get out! The parade wasn't as grand as I though it might be, but it was neat to finally see the Chinatown area.
