Druid Ridge Cemetery (Duck Pond) (map)
Daffy ducks, goofy gesse, and a handsome heron - all this and more at the duck pond at Druid Ridge Cemetery in Pikesville, MD.
If the morning is clear, there is fantastic light at 9AM on the pond and its denizens.
With a little encouragement (day-old-bread or stale donuts are great,) geese and ducks will come up out of the water and you can get good shots of them fairly close-up if you have even a moderate telephoto - the "kit zooms" on your DSLR will do fine.
We may or may not see the heron - but if we do, he'll likely be on the opposite shore of the pond - a long telephoto, 200mm equivalent or more, will help here.
Besides the duck pond, there is the cemetery itself. There are a number of statues and mausoleums that are photographically interesting - you can use a car to get around the grounds of the large cemetary to find photogenic spots.
We'll shoot until 10:30 AM or so, and then adjourn for the most important part of the meetup ;-) - breakfast/brunch/coffee at New Town Diner in Ownings Mills, only about 10 minutes away from the cemetery. http://maps.google.co...
This will be my first meetup. I am soo excited. I don't drive can anyone get me at Park heights and Slade Ave? That's as close as the bus goes. And give me a ride to the resteraunt? It would be greatly appreciated. 410-624-6072. Samatra
Tried to get some heron shots - just couldn't catch the light. Very enjoyable and relaxing meeting people and chatting about photography at breakfast at Lenny's deli.
Wow, this is great turnout - I'm looking forward to seeing everyone Sunday.
Don't forget to stop by the bakery or supermarket before Sunday and buy a loaf of marked-down, day-old bread. Or just get the cheapo store-brand white bread - I wouldn't eat it, but these ducks and geese go nuts for it ;-)
