Greetings Shutterbugs!
Let's meet for a Saturday morning exploring the historic U Street Corridor in Northwest DC. This is quite a picturesque neighborhood with lots of African-American historic sites and some great eats as well.
We will meet at the African American Civil War Memorial at 10AM (check the metro exit as there are two exits from this station, one of which puts you right at the memorial) and wander through such landmarks as the "Black Broadway" where the likes of Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Pearl Bailey played in local venues, and where others like Duke Ellington, Thurgood Marshall and Langston Hughes lived and worked.
The architecture here is rich and the neighborhood is steeped in tradition. It should make for some interesting photo ops.
Before we leave, perhaps we can stop at Ben's Chili Bowl for some of it's classic cusine - "half-smokes" and chili-cheese fries. This place is a Washington institution and photo op all by it's self.
Hi - this is my first event with the group. Does the walk last 1/2 day or a couple hours? Thanks
I have printed several copies of Cultural Tourism DC's guide to the U Street corridor for us to use tomorrow. If you want to preview it or print your own copy, here's a link: http://www.culturaltourismdc.org/usr_doc/U_St_Heritage_Tr...![]()
I am really looking forward to seeing you tomorow moring.
Plan on a couple of hours - maybe more. We often find a lunch spot as well at the end of the excursion!
Welcome Amanda! I anticipate splitting into smaller groups of 5 or 6 - most of our members are wonderful and supportive folks - and I am sure we can group you with great folks!
I tried to make it! Got cought up in the Metro mess thus morning. Waited 45min at gallery place to get a train north to U-street, there was supposed to be shuttle bus service but with WMATA you can guess how that went! Disappointed I couldn't make it but there's always next time! I would recommend for the next Meetup that one of the organizers leave their cell number on the event page or email it out to those who RSVPd Yes.
Joey,
Sorry about the Metro mess. We heard there was a problem and waited a bit but not long enough for everyone caught in the mess. Good suggestion about the cell phone number - ususally I post it but didn't this time. Hope you will sign up for future events and sorry we missed you this time.
any chance of rain out?
